ALBANY, NY March 12, 2025 – The Capital Region Transportation Council (the Transportation Council) is hosting four public meetings (three in-person and one virtual) across the Capital Region in March 2025 to gather public input on proposed transportation safety strategies and actions to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes to an eventual goal of zero on all public roadways. These wide-ranging strategies are targeted to address the issues identified through analysis of crashes in the region and extensive feedback collected by stakeholders.
Each of the four public meetings will present the same content and will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the development of the Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, comment on proposed strategies and actions to improve transportation safety, and meet with the project team. Community members are encouraged to attend the public meeting that is most convenient for them.
Three of the public meetings will be structured as in-person open houses, and community members are welcome to stop by the following locations at their convenience during the following timeframes:
- Albany, NY: Tuesday March 18, 2025, from 4:00-7:00PM in the Community Room on the second floor of the Washington Avenue Branch Library located at 161 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12210
- Troy, NY: Saturday March 22, 2025, from 9:00AM-2PM at the Troy Farmers Market inside the Troy Atrium at 4 3rd Street, Troy, NY 12180
- Saratoga Springs, NY: Wednesday March 26, 2025, from 4:00-7:00PM at the Franklin Square Market located at 55 Railroad Pl 1st Floor, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

The development of the Capital Region Vision Zero Safety Action Plan is a collaborative effort between the Transportation Council and the Cities of Albany, Saratoga Springs, Troy, and Watervliet, as well as the Village of Green Island and was made possible by a $1.15 M grant from the Federal Highway Administration through the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program. This effort includes all roadways within the Transportation Council’s planning area of Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties (except the Town of Moreau and Village of South Glens Falls). The Plan will result in area speed limit recommendations and a prioritized listing of actionable projects including capital transportation projects.
Vision Zero is a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together diverse and necessary stakeholders to address fatal and serious injuries. Vision Zero acknowledges that many factors contribute to safe mobility — including roadway design, speeds, behaviors, technology, and policies — and sets clear goals to achieve the shared goal of zero fatalities and severe injuries. This effort will be guided by the Safe System Approach, which builds and reinforces multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes from happening in the first place and minimize the harm caused to people when crashes do occur. This approach shifts away from conventional thinking about safety because it focuses on both human mistakes AND human vulnerability, designing a system with many redundancies in place to protect everyone.
