Safety & Complete Streets

Safety

Safety

Safety is the cornerstone of transportation planning. Planners and engineers are tasked with making the transportation system as safe as possible.

The Transportation Council is leading the development of a Vision Zero Action Plan with the goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries in the Capital Region. The plan will use crash data analysis and regional data to prioritize locations for safety improvements.

Complete Streets

Complete Streets

Complete Streets are roads, streets, and systems that are designed to enable safe, convenient, and community context informed travel that is accessible for users of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets design concepts specifically emphasize the importance of designing to encourage slower motorist speeds and human-scale design to facilitate the improved experience of travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transportation users. The Capital District Complete Streets Design Guide is available to fill in gaps where the context of local streets differs from that of state highways.

The Transportation Council has held a number of Educational and Technical Workshops to improve local municipal communication and coordination, training and education.

The Transportation Council helps cities, towns, and villages collect data on sidewalks, crosswalks, and other facilities to improve accessibility according to the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Check out our resources page for details on ADA Transition Plans near you.

Active Transportation

Active Transportation

Active transportation is any form of transportation that involve human power rather than motor vehicles, which includes walking, biking, rolling, and other electric-assisted forms of mobility.

The Transportation Council supports active transportation with regional plans and local feasibility projects. These efforts help create a network of safe and convenient facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.
