Public Workshop Announced to Identify Transportation Safety Issues and Solutions Around Albany High School

All are welcome. Please join us to help build a shared vision of roadway safety in the City of Albany.

ALBANY, NY February 20, 2025 – In partnership with the City of Albany, the Capital Region Transportation Council (the Transportation Council) is hosting a public workshop on Wednesday February 26, 2025 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the Large Meeting Room at the Pine Hills Branch of the Albany Public Library located at 517 Western Avenue, Albany, NY 12208. The purpose of the workshop is to work collaboratively with the public to identify transportation safety issues and develop solutions to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and motorists along the roadways around Albany High School including Washington Avenue, N. Main Avenue, Western Avenue, and Ontario Street.

Community members are welcome to stop by the public workshop anytime between 4:00PM and 7:00PM. While there will not be a formal presentation, the public is invited to participate in guided walking tours of the roadways surrounding Albany High School to gain a firsthand understanding of safety issues and potential improvements. The walking tours will leave from the front entrance of the Pine Hills Branch Library at 4:00PM and 5:00PM.

Public parking is available at the Pine Hills Branch Library and on-street along N. Allen St, Western Ave, and Madison Ave. Bicycle parking is available by the side entrance to the library. Coming by bus? Visit: www.cdta.org

Input gathered during the public workshop will inform the development of the Transportation Council’s Capital Region Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, which focuses on reducing fatal and serious injury crashes to an eventual goal of zero on all public roadways in the Capital Region.

The Transportation Council welcomes all at this public workshop and understands that accessible meetings benefit people with and without disabilities. If you require any assistive technologies, language translation, American Sign Language interpretation, and/or adaptive strategies to attend and engage at this public workshop, please contact Liz Podowski King with Highland Planning at 585-649-1210 or liz@highland-planning.com at least three (3) business days in advance of the public workshop.

The development of the Capital Region Vision Zero Safety Action Plan is a collaborative effort between the Transportation Council and the Cities of Albany, Saratoga Springs, Troy, and Watervliet, as well as the Village of Green Island and was made possible by a $1.15 M grant from the Federal Highway Administration through the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program with additional support from the New York State Department of Transportation. This effort includes all roadways within the Transportation Council’s planning area of Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties (except the Town of Moreau and Village of South Glens Falls). The Plan will result in area speed limit recommendations and a prioritized listing of actionable projects including capital transportation projects.

Vision Zero is a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together diverse and necessary stakeholders to address fatal and serious injuries. Vision Zero acknowledges that many factors contribute to safe mobility — including roadway design, speeds, behaviors, technology, and policies — and sets clear goals to achieve the shared goal of zero fatalities and severe injuries. This effort will be guided by the Safe System Approach, which focuses on building multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes from happening in the first place and also minimizing the harm caused to people when crashes do occur. This approach shifts away from conventional thinking about safety because it focuses on both human mistakes AND human vulnerability, designing a system with many redundancies in place to protect everyone.
